When my first baby was handed to me I wasn't sure what to do. Of course I was thrilled, overwhelmed, ecstatic and emotional but I had told everyone I was going to breastfeed. Now she was here and I was expected to get on with it, put her to my breast and nourish her... Well to be quite honest I was a little bit afraid. I was lying in a room full of medical equipment and strangers and my husband had just witnessed me in a state of distress and undress such as never before. All I really wanted to do was get washed, dressed and go for a sleep. But, there was a little tiny girl in my arms looking a bit hungry and everyone was watching and waiting.
Tentatively I showed her my breast and waited. She waited. I poked at her mouth, then at her nose with my nipple. She opened her tiny mouth wide and dived forward. Amazed at this tiny wonder of nature I gazed at her as she began to suckle. I marvelled as she guzzled and swallowed... I was breastfeeding!
As the days went by it wasn't all that I expected. It was painful and burned every time she latched on. But I persevered and we made it. Sixteen months later she decided she had had enough of mummy's milk and with tears in my eyes I concluded that breastfeeding had been a wonderful experience and one which I hoped to repeat.
So how do you breastfeed? Here are some tips...
Try to have skin-to-skin contact immediately after the birth, preferably before the baby has been cleaned up.
Get comfortable and hold the baby in a way that suits you both.
Gently place your nipple under baby's nose, and above her top lip. The baby should instinctively begin to root about for it.
Wait until baby opens her mouth really wide. Then put her on the breast ensuring she has as much of the areola(the area around your nipple)as possible in her mouth. In other words she should have a good mouthful of breast.
Baby will begin to suckle very quickly at first. As colostrum (pre-milk rich with antibodies) begins to flow the sucking will become much slower and you may even notice baby gulping as she swallows this pre-milk.
When baby has had enough she will let go of the breast and may even fall asleep.
Within about three days the colostrum will be replaced by mature milk.
The first feeds may last a long time or they may occur very frequently for short periods of time. Just as mum is learning how to breastfeed so too is baby. Within a few weeks a routine of sorts will have become established!
Breastfeeding is by no means easy but it does get easier after the first four weeks or so. At times it is painful but always satisfying. It's always convenient and requires no advance preparation or sterilising of bottles! Most problems occur as a result of incorrect positioning of baby at the breast. Don't let the baby suck at your nipple - she must have lots of the areola as well, otherwise you will get sore and this is when many new mums give up.
By breastfeeding your baby she will benefit tremendously and there are numerous health benefits for mum too. Persevere - it's worth every minute of it.

When It is alright to let them decide?
Yesterday I took my son to the barber shop to get his back to school hair cut. As we sat in the barber shop, I reminisced over how much my son has grown. I remember the first time I took him to the barber shop, I had to sit in the barbers chair and have him sit on my lap just so he could stop squirming and get his hair cut. And now look at him, he walks into the barber shop as if it is second nature. True, I still have my moments when I stand by the barber’s chair, and oversee him and my son as they have their “man” talk.
But yesterday all that changed. As I went to the barber shop with my son, he ran over to the pictures of hair cuts on the wall and said “mommy, I want this one.” All of the guys laughed at him, jeering him “your mother is not going to let you get that son, not until your older.” But as I looked in Isaiah’s eyes, I couldn’t help it. I had to allow him to have this one decision. For once I was going to step back and let him decide on how he wanted his hair to look. As I swayed past the older men in the shop, to get a closer look at the picture, I couldn’t believe it! My son wanted to get a Mohawk with a spider man design on the side. As I turned around to tell him pick another cut, I remembered the look in his eyes and the excitement on his face as he marched up to the picture and pointed to it and said: “mommy, I want this one.” How could I turn around and tell him no.
As he sat in the chair, the barber looked at me, the older men looked at me, and Isaiah looked at me as if they were all waiting for me to yell: STOP, I’m not ready for this, he’s too young to make this choice!” But I just politely smiled and stared back at them and cheered Isaiah on.
As I watched him get his hair cut, I began to wonder, at what point do we let our children began to make decisions for themselves? When do we step back and let them take control? Sure this time it was something as minor as a hair cut. But later on who knows what it will be? How do we prepare them to make good decisions? Or to accept the decisions that they’ve made? As parents we always want to hold their hand, choose which path that we assume is the right path for them and watch themhappily march down it. We always want to be the ones who block the bumps, pitfalls, and cover up the spills, but when do we stop? Should we start teaching them decision making skills at at four, five, six? Or do we wait until they get older?
After Isaiah got his hair cut and I brought him home, he rushed upstairs to the mirror and looked at his hair cut. I couldn’t quite figure out what he was doing, so innocently I asked “what’s up?” As he turned around to answer me, he had... (read the full article at the link below)

Choosing The First Step Stool For Your Child
When your little one grows to be a tot and is capable to walk, it will not take a long time before he starts to run with a lot of speed further on towards his freedom. You can lend a hand to them to achieve their objectives by giving a secure and strong step stool to get to the stuff that is merely away from their contact.
When are you supposed to purchase a first step stool for your kid? A made to order step stool can be an affectionate baby present. It may be used as a component of their nursery decoration till the kid is all set to make use of it. It would be proper to get the step stool in your house and all set before your kid begins to climb your closets, and hauling the dining chairs over the flooring to the ledge, and ahead of your backside going out from hanging them above the bathroom basin to clean their fingers. If the kid had started to walk earlier, then odds are that he would be all set to use a step stool earlier than the majority.
What manner of step stool you are supposed to buy? In general, there are three fundamental styles:
• Step Stool Chair - the underside rung can be turned over upside in order to craft a chair, as a result it would have double functions. This is fine if the step stool is to be made use of by a book shelf, where the kid is able to get to her most wanted book and then be seated to read the book, or beside the TV.
• Single Step Stool - the rung may be egg shaped (like in cricket), rectangle, square, or round. These are more often than not of a lighter weight and effortless to move from one room to another. Be certain to look for a strong, and properly balanced style.
• Double Step Stool – for nearly everyone this is a well liked and accepted design. The plane back side is strong next to a bed or a cabinet. The upper rung might have out of sight storage space beneath. A number of them have cut outs in the back or side for carrying effortlessly.
It is a tricky selection to make about which color or design to select. Step stools appear in an extensive range of magnificent colors to go with any decoration. Pick a stool that has been hand painted to go along with a subject matter and to turn out to be an heirloom. A puzzle step stool does not just make a good present and make available a step up, but it in addition educates the kid to be familiar with and spell out their name.
Prior to buying a step stool, make your mind up as to which part of the home it would be made use in. A lot of families have a step stool that is kept beside the kid’s bed, 1 in the toilet, and 1 in the kitchen that could be pulled about by the kid. As your kid gets to be freer, do not fail to remember to make certain that household medicines, cleaners, and whatever thing that is harmful stays away from your kid’s reach.
Whatsoever color or style step stool you purchase, you will be surprised at how involved your kid gets to be to his or her own step stool.

It is no secret these days that breastfeeding is best. This information comes at new mothers from every direction. Obstetricians, pediatricians, and parenting magazines all agree that breastfeeding is the way to go. So why are there so many different bottles on the shelves these days? Childproofing Your Home
One of the most important steps you can take to prepare for a baby is childproofing your home. Little hands will get into things you never even thought of, so being prepared is critical to your child’s safety. Here are some areas of your home that need attention to get you started on your childproofing project.
· Electrical Outlets – You can buy inexpensive covers to keep little fingers out of your outlets, or simply put a piece of furniture in front of them.
· Cords – Be they electrical cords or cords for blinds or draperies, they are a risk. Cords from blinds or draperies are a choking hazard, and electrical cords can cause a shock, or can cause baby to pull something heavy (such as the lamp at the other end of that cord) down on top of them
· Rickety furniture – Be certain that you don’t have unstable furniture around. When your baby begins pulling up, he could pull the furniture right down on top of him. Sometimes it’s necessary to attach furniture, such as top heavy bookcases to the wall.
· Plants – Some houseplants are poisonous, so be certain to keep plants out of baby’s reach.
· Radiators – If you live in an older home with radiators, you will need to put barriers in front of them or radiator covers over them during winter months.
· Fireplace – Be certain your fireplace is equipped with a grill or glass doors to protect your child’s little fingers.
· Stairs – Install baby gates to keep your little one from tumbling down the stairs.
· Cabinet doors and drawers – Install childproof latches so that your baby is unable to open drawers and doors, particularly those where you store sharp objects or cleaning supplies.
· Railings – Be certain that any railings in your home, such as those on your stairs, have no more than a five inch gap between any vertical posts. You’d be amazed at how easily a baby’s head can get stuck.
All of these are important steps to readying your home for those days when baby starts crawling around. But, probably the most important thing you can do is to learn to keep your everyday things put away. Items that adults use regularly, like scissors, pins, coins, buttons and letter openers can all be very hazardous to a baby. It’s going to take some getting used to, but with some preparation, you can organize your life so that your everyday activities don’t put your baby at risk.

Changing A Nappy
Congratulations! It's a boy... or a girl... You've imagined those words throughout your nine magical months. But, what you probably have not thought about is the part where you need to put a fresh nappy on the little person!
Even after having two little girls I worried about changing my little boy's nappy for the first time. For some reason I thought it was going to be really difficult. But actually it was easier!
So how do you change a baby's nappy? Assuming you are using disposable nappies, as most mums do, at least in the beginning, here are some tips:
Lie your baby on a flat surface, preferably on a soft changing mat; this allows little accidents to be wiped up quickly. If you are placing your baby on a raised surface or a changing station, never leave him unattended for even the slightest moment. Babies can and do fall off raised surfaces, often with disastrous consequences.
Advances in technology allow us to keep the wet surface of the nappy away from the baby. Although this is great for your baby,it can make it difficult to tell if the nappy is wet. So how will you know if the nappy needs to be changed? A wet nappy will feel soft and squishy on the outside. It may also have increased in size. The moisture absorbing material within the nappy swells when it comes into contact with urine making it easy to tell if the nappy is wet.
Obviously, a soiled nappy is easier to detect as you can just peep inside; or, more often than not, you can smell it!
As your baby gets older he will become more wriggly at every nappy change. A good tip is to hang a mobile above his changing station or give him a different toy to keep his interest at changing time - making nappy changes much less tiring for mum!
Remove the old nappy. Wipe the baby's bottom with some cotton wool pads soaked in warm water. You do not need to use soap or scented wipes on a newborn baby. Newborns have extremely soft, sensitive skin which is easily irritated. A so-called top and tail, or a warm bath once a day, is enough. When the baby is a few weeks old you can wash him with a warm soapy cloth or some sensitive baby wipes at each nappy change.
Wipe baby girls from front to back to avoid the risk of cross infection. With baby boys you will need to ensure you wipe around and under their little bits! However, never pull back the foreskin. You may cause damage and infection if you attempt to.
Creams and talc are unnecessary. Nappies today are so effective at keeping moisture away from the skin that creams are not required. In fact, creams can actually hinder the nappy's performance, making irritation more likely.
If your baby has nappy rash, and you really feel that cream is required, apply it very thinly before putting on the fresh nappy. Also, let the air at your baby's bottom. Let him lie on the changing mat on the floor for a while without a nappy. You may want to put an old towel or absorbant bed cloth under him so that he will not be lying in a puddle getting cold, if he does wet it.
Put the fresh nappy under the baby's bottom, with the sticky seals at the back!
Lift the front of the nappy up over the baby's bottom and fasten it closed. Do not fasten it too tightly as this will be uncomfortable. Allow the baby some room to breath!
Voila! All Done... until the next one!

Why Taking Care Of Mommy Is So Important
It’s a novel concept, isn’t it; somebody taking care of you? Well, that somebody ultimately has to be you, and I know how it is, you’re way too busy taking care of everybody else to give yourself any time. But, let me tell you why you have to take care of yourself, and give you some ideas as to how to do accomplish this monumental feat.
You’re the Mom – and if you’re out of commission, everybody suffers
If you can’t manage to take care of yourself, for yourself, then take care of yourself for everybody else! A well-rested, happy Mom is much more likely to have happy, thriving children. If you’re tired, or you haven’t had an adult conversation in weeks, it will start to show. You’ll be grumpy to say the least; at worst you could be downright dangerous when doing something like driving a car. A frazzled Mom is no good to anyone.
How you treat yourself is how you’re teaching your children to treat you
If you never let your children see that you have needs, or that you take the time to meet those needs, you’re teaching them that you are, indeed, a doormat, and should be treated as such.
Ok, so now you know you need to take care of yourself, physically and emotionally, but how do you make it happen?
Start with your calendar
Put some appointments in it that will let you have some time to yourself. You choose the activities that will soothe your soul, but whatever they are, make time for them. A few hours a week devoted to something you love other than your family, will help keep you refreshed and feeling like your old self.
Ask for help
You know by now that men are different, right? Well, one of the ways they are different is that they don’t mind telling their partner what they need. And they expect the same from us. If you need your husband to plan to watch the baby for three hours every Saturday so that you can have some time to meditate, vegetate, shop, whatever, you need to tell him. He’s not going to come up with that idea on his own, but if you tell him what you need, he’s likely to oblige.
Make friends with other women in the same boat
There is no substitute for a girlfriend who understands. If you’re a stay at home mom, find some others to hang out with. It may mean some company for you and a play date for your child at the same time. If you’re a working Mom trying to juggle everything, hook up with some other working Mothers to talk things through. It works wonders to know you’re not alone. Plus, you might get some valuable ideas for handling some of the issues you face.
As the Mom, you’re really the heart of your family. Your well being translates into everyone’s well being. Take the time to enjoy the whole person that you are, not just the Mom.

You Can Use Your Praise To Overcome infertility!
Copyright 2006 The Lord Word On Healing Publications
Woman, you are infertile." Who said that to you? Can't conceive, can't reproduce, barren, sterile, incapable? Who said those words to you? Because they were wrong!
The Bible says: "You can through Christ who straightens you." For this is what God says to you: "Be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth. (Genesis 1: 28).
It is your God-given right and His desire for you to have the children and family you want so badly. When you have hit a wall with science and medicine, it is time to turn to God and let Him work His abundant miracles in your life…
Who then is this God that said these words to you? The Bible says, “He is the one who created the heavens and the earth and everything in it, with the words of His mouth.”
After God had created the universe, God again decided to create man in His own image after His likeness. The bible says: “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them, and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. This is God’s perfect will for creating you. For you to reproduce and have your own children.
When God made the woman He took time to make her skilfully. When you look at the reproductive organs of woman you will know that this is the work of a skilful God who knew exactly what He had planned. And what to do in order to accomplish His plans.
Looking at the female reproductive organs you see a most wonderful piece of workmanship done by almighty God.
Starting from the vagina, you come to the cervix. From the cervix, you come to the uterus or the womb which is where the foetus grows for nine months. The womb is lined by the endometrium- this is a specialised type of tissue that undergoes changes during the menstrual cycle.
You then find the ovaries which contain the eggs. Then the Fallopian tube, which is the tube that the egg travels through before resting in the womb.
Each piece of the female reproductive anatomy is designed to work in harmony so as to accomplish a specific purpose which is the production of a child.
Now what can a woman do when her doctor says to her “Woman You Are Infertile? And we can’t help you”. After exhausting all medical avenues, what can she really do.
I know one thing that works. I have recommended this to many women who are happy mothers of their own children TODAY. You can follow my advice if you want.
Let me share a TESTIMONY: A lady came to me with a problem. The doctors had told her she had no eggs in her ovaries. This was a hopeless case. I recommended exactly what I am telling you now. Within four weeks she was pregnant. She is a happy mother of a baby girl today.
God loves to hear us praise him. This is what God says about our praise and thanksgiving to him:
Sacrifice thank offerings to God. Fulfill your vows to the Most High, and call upon me in the day of trouble. I will deliver you, and you will honour me." Psalm 50:14-15.
God says, in times of trouble, if you will praise him- he will deliver from that problem. The world says worry is the next step when you are in trouble. God says praise is what he recommends when you are in trouble. Try this and see if it works or not.
The bible says-He who sacrifices thank offerings honours me, and he prepares the way so that I may show him the salvation of God." Psalm 50:23.
I love praising God. Because when you praise him he make all things beautiful in your life. He has done it in my life many times. Thanksgiving is a way maker. I know that to be true. God says if you will praise him, he will show you his faithfulness.
Now open your mouth and begin to praise God with these scriptures:
Father, I praise you. You have wonderfully and skilfully created me as a woman to fulfil a specific purpose on earth, to bring forth children. Only you, God could have done this and I give you praise. You, Almighty God, are exalted above the heavens. I enter your gates with thanksgiving and your courts with praise.
I give thanks to you and praise your name. I will praise you forever for what you have done. I will praise God's name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving. I will come before him with thanksgiving. O my Strength, I sing praise to you. You, O God, are my fortress, my loving God. You have blessed me with my own child. My faith is strong in you.
I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. With singing lips my mouth will praise you. Who is like the Lord my God? Who stoops down to look on the heavens and the earth? He looks down to “settles the barren woman…” in her home. God has stooped for my sake and crowned my womanhood with motherhood. I bless you.
The God who dwells in the heavens above had stooped through His love and grace in His only begotten son Jesus Christ, in order that He might lift me up. I bless you. I am lifted up. In faith I call myself a happy mother of children, According to God’s word. Praise the Lord. (Psalms 113: 6-9).
Father, I praise you for stooping just to bless me. I thank you for your words that say I am a mother of my own children.
Thank-you for creating me as a woman in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
Woman, you are infertile." Who said that to you? Can't conceive, can't reproduce, barren, sterile, incapable? Who said those words to you? Because they were wrong!

Pacifier Or Not?
Before I had children, I swore my child would never use a pacifier. To me, they were simply signs that a child was just not very well taken care of. You know, Mom doesn’t want to pick the baby up and comfort her, so she just puts a pacifier in her mouth to quiet her. But, I’m older now, and I have three children, so I’m wiser too. There definitely are times when a pacifier is a huge help – not just a crutch for Mom.
As it turns out, some newborns just have a greater urge to suckle than others. If your baby is like this, a pacifier is almost a necessity. For these babies, the suckling they get from nursing or taking a bottle is simply not enough. My daughter was one of these babies, and unless she fell asleep while nursing or taking a bottle, that pacifier was critical to getting her to sleep.
Other children simply don’t need this extra suckling, and, for these children, a pacifier is usually not necessary. Occasionally sucking their thumb or fist is satisfying enough for them. Watch your child in those first few days, and make the decision based on your baby’s behavior. One caution, however; if your baby is nursing, you should avoid the pacifier until your baby’s nursing habits are fully established. A pacifier can cause nipple confusion in babies who are struggling with breastfeeding.
The problem with pacifiers isn’t really the use of the pacifier itself, rather overuse, or use of it long past a normal age. Pacifier use can cause serious dental issues, and should be used only for the required amount of time. Plus, the older your child gets, the harder it will be for you to keep it clean. Also, if your child relies on a pacifier to fall asleep, you will be required to retrieve it for him multiple times during the night, when he is unable to locate it on his own.
If your child uses a pacifier, look for the natural opportunities that will arise for giving it up, and seize them. For example, my daughter caught a bad cold at about six months old, and wouldn’t use the pacifier; because she was so congested she could hardly breathe. As soon as she started to refuse it because of the cold, I put it out of sight. Once her cold was over, she had forgotten about it. My middle son held on to his a little longer, but at about thirteen months, I noticed that just before he fell asleep at night, he would toss the pacifier out of his crib. So, one night, I picked it up off the floor, and put it away. Same ending – he never noticed it was gone.
If your child needs it, a pacifier can be a great comforter, and can make life easier for you, too. Just be sure not to let it go on for too long, or you and the baby can become dependent!
