Solar Lights for Walkways - Cut Costs

Over the last fifteen years, solar energy has become a highly flexible power source. One of the best ways to use it and cut costs is go with solar lighting for your walkways. A common misconception among many people is that solar energy requires large, bulky panels to work. While this is true if you want to produce large amounts of electricity for a structure, it leaves out a large segment of cheaper solar users. The solar industry has made major advancements in creating one piece solar platforms that are cheap and can be used for practical purposes. Using solar lights for pathways around your home is one area. Solar lighting is now the choice for gardens, landscaping and lighting paths. Lighting products typically come in sets of two to six self-contained lights. Each light typically is comprised of a metal or plastic stem with a lighting mechanism on the top. The lighting mechanism uses LED technology and is powered by a small solar panel built into the top of the piece. The lights can be purchased with or without backup batteries depending on your needs. Once you’ve selected your solar lighting pieces, you simply map out where you want to add lighting in your landscaping. Next, you put the solar lights in place by sticking them in the ground to a point where they are snug and will not blow over in the wind. Congratulations! You now have lighting for your pathways that isn’t adding to your utility bill. Your lights will charge during the day and light up in the evening. Depending on the particular brand, the lights may stay on throughout the night. Alternatively, certain brands will run for 8 hours or so, which means they go dark around midnight or one in the morning. Maintaining your solar lights is very simple. You really don’t have to do anything. If the lights start to dim or go out earlier than usual, they are not broken. Typically, the problem is you have dirty solar panels. Clean them off with water or follow the manufacturer direction. Once clean, the lights should work perfectly. Using the sun to power your outdoor lighting needs is a great way to highlight your home and save money on energy costs. Keep them clean and the lights will last for years.

Different Kinds of Mobility Scooters

If you have difficulty walking, whether due to age, muscular disease, or arthritis, you may benefit from a mobility scooter. Mobility scooters are personal mobility vehicles that transport a seated individual. There are many different types of mobility scooters that are designed to fulfill the specific needs of their rider. Travel scooters, or portable mobility scooters, are designed to be easily transported. They can be completely disassembled in a matter of minutes and put back together just as quick. They are designed so that no one piece of the scooter is too heavy for most people and can be placed in small places like the trunk of a car. They come in both 3 and 4-wheel design, but many are 3-wheels. 3-wheeled mobility scooters are a very common type of mobility scooter. They offer excellent maneuverability and are great for indoor use. However, they are not as stable as 4-wheeled mobility scooters. While 3-wheeled mobility scooters are great for indoor use or areas that are paved, they do not do as well in outdoor situations. For outdoor use a 4-wheeled mobility scooter is much better. They are much more stable and better able to handle rough terrain because the weight is evenly divided between the front and back of the mobility device. Of course 4-wheeled mobility scooters are not as maneuverable though. If you do not have a travel scooter and you wish to transport it, you will have to have some way of getting it on or into your vehicle. Many people purchase external hitch mounted carriers, which are relatively inexpensive. Internal scooter lifts can also be used. A third option is to purchase a foldable ramp, but this requires enough room to be able to physically drive the scooter into the vehicle and are really only practical on vans or trucks. It is important to consider where you are going to use your mobility scooter before you purchase it. This will help you necessitate what type to get.

Curing Cyber-Sex Infidelity

Studies show that about 60% of married men cheat at least once in their marriage and about 40% of women are unfaithful, too.

Both men and women are very capable of being unfaithful in marriage even though society perceives men to be the sex that cheats; this stereotype is not true, though - both men and women are unfaithful in marriage.

Some psychologists even predict that the number of women who are unfaithful in marriage is far higher. Reasons given are that women are not as prone to being caught and men are more honest about it when confronted. So, what really causes a spouse to become unfaithful?

Although unknown for sure, it is safe to say that ever since we have had marriage, we have also had adultery. It is not a likely thing to want to admit but adultery dates back to biblical times.

For example, Jesus went to the Mount of Olives and spoke about a woman who had sex without marriage. Adultery was then punishable by stoning to death. Jesus told the accusers, "Let the person without sin throw the first stone." Since the discovery of social networking sites, dating sites and chat rooms, being unfaithful in marriage - especially through the Internet - has skyrocketed despite Biblical admonitions against it.

Such websites as The Ashley Madison Agency have even turned to making a profit from those who become unfaithful in their marriage. The website is solely designed for those married spouses who are seeking to become unfaithful in their marriage.

Consider this fact reported last year at a convention of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers: Two-thirds of attorneys surveyed said the Internet played a significant role in the termination of marriage in the prior 12 months with excessive interest in online porn contributing to more than half of such cases. As discussed below, many of these instances were uncovered through spy software.

Interestingly enough, this subject has also spawned a new type of software - spy software. Spy software is not spyware! Since it is becoming increasingly difficult to find out whether your spouse has been, or is being, unfaithful, especially through the secrecy of the web, "significant others" use spy software more and more to uncover the truth about their relationships.

Marriage partners are employing spy software to check on the spouse they are suspicious about through the computer.

Studies show most of the time a spouse will begin unfaithfulness on the family computer and that is why spy software is so potent!

The difficulty arises when a spouse starts using a business computer or laptop to abandon their marriage. There is plenty of software on the market for this though, but one brand of spy software that surpasses all of the competition is that of Awareness Technologies of Marina del Rey, California.

The key to spy software is to choose one that monitor's everything your spouse does. The Awareness spy software uniquely monitors Instant Messages, email, desktop activity, websites, and even logs all keystrokes. Spy software is easy to install and in the case of WebWatcher or SONAR, easy to monitor.

Suspecting that your spouse is cheating is a feeling that you do not want to admit, but it is also something that you do not want to disregard, either. Marriage is based on trust and loyalty and while you may only suspect that your spouse is being unfaithful, you have to trust your instincts and verify it with products such as Awareness Technologies' spy software - if for no other reason than to maintain your sanity.

The Many Uses For Canvas Tote Bags

The Many Uses For Canvas Tote Bags If you have ever noticed someone at the beach with a bag thrown over their shoulder or a shopper with the same, you have probably already seen a few of the many uses for canvas tote bags. These convenient accessories are sold everywhere, in every color and almost any design imaginable. They are available in a variety of sizes to accommodate virtually every use. Whether it's a day at the beach, a picnic, browsing at the flea market or just a day at the mall, canvas tote bags are very popular. The design options are unlimited with canvas tote bags. If you like solid denim, you're in luck. If, on the other hand, you prefer a solid hot pink, casual khaki or classic black, these and more are also commercially available. For the creative do-it-yourselfer, a broad range of patches, emblems and add-ons are available in the craft section of most retail stores. These little products allow for personalization, including animals, flowers and almost any favorite design that you wish. All it takes is a needle, some thread and a little patience to personalize any canvas tote bag with that special touch. Or, if you are really creative, purchase some fabric and make your own tote bag. They are simple in their design, but unmatched in their convenience. Solid canvas tote bags aren't all that's available, however. Totes featuring nature, flowers, religion and pets are also readily available if you are willing to shop around. As mentioned previously, there are a variety of uses and the possibilities are truly limitless with canvas tote bags. If you are into internet auctions, perhaps you enjoy selling items online for extra cash. What better way to carry all of your packages into the post office than with canvas tote bags? It's a lot easier to manage than trying to balance packages against your chest while watching where you are going. Just toss the tote over your shoulder and you are all set. If you plan to spend the day at the beach, perhaps you will want to take along a good book, some sunscreen, a beach towel and a pair of sunglasses. Well, if you are wearing a swimsuit, there certainly isn't going to be a pocket for you to carry these things. Consider packing everything into a convenient canvas tote bag and enjoy the sun in style. If you're out shopping and find that the handles on plastic bags are just too flimsy to carry around the mall for hours, consider canvas tote bags as a way to carry your purchases. After you pay for your items and the cashier gives you a bag, simply put that bag down into your tote and you won't have to worry about the straps breaking or becoming week. Happy toting!

Cuckoo Clocks And Timeless Memories

I'm starting to age I guess in that I'm enjoying more the sounds of my youth like a simple clockwork cuckoo clock. The timeless sound of the cuckoo bring back many memories. When I was a child, both my uncle and grandparents had cookoo clocks. I remember they were dark colored cases with ornate carvings but the bird that came out was brightly colored. I was told these were from the black forest in Germany.

I guess the Germans have a lock on authentic cuckoo clocks as when I got older, I went shopping for one and they were all German made clockworks. The new ones however were just like I remember. Darker carved woods on the outside with ornate carvings.

My parents had both a mantle clock and a wall clock that struck the quarter half and hour times. They were wonderful. Many people have fond memories about growing up. Foods, holidays, smells, and even sounds. I remember how our home was always breathing the sounds of our clocks. Even as an adult, going for visits brought me in many respects back to childhood days when hearing the constant patterned sounds of those time trackers. It was home!

Today, I have a grandfather clock, cuckoo clock, and several other clockwork type clocks all around my home. Yes, they aren't as "accurate" as quartz timepieces or as fancy as the latest technology has to offer. But there's something about their even pace, pendulums, weekly winding and yes, the announcement that time is marching on, that is somehow soothing. Almost melodic.

In the night, when every is asleep, I sometimes go down to the living room and just think. The clocks are busy, as always, pacing out time and announcing yet another quarter hour has past. It's recognition of mortality, that some things don't last, while others, like the cuckoo clock seem to last lifetimes.

The Importance of Fat Soluble Vitamins

While taking a multivitamin everyday is a good idea, some health professionals raise concern over the possibility of an individual ingesting more vitamins and minerals than their body requires. Many individuals don't worry about taking too many vitamins and minerals because they believe that any excess is flushed through the kidneys. This is one of the most common misconceptions related to vitamin supplementation. There are 13 essential vitamins (A, C, D, E, K, B12, and the 7 B-complex vitamins). Each vitamin is either water-soluble or fat-soluble group. This is how vitamins are categorized. As referenced by their name, water-soluble vitamins (C and B-complex) dissolve in water and so any excess is excreted in the urine. Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) on the other hand are dissolved in fat that exists in the intestines and are eventually stored in the liver. Since fat-soluble vitamins can remain in the body for an extended period of time, it is this issue that concerns health professionals. If an individual supplements their diet with vitamins and their normal diet provides a sufficient amount of fat-soluble vitamins, there is the possibility that the excess amount of vitamins could cause toxicity. As the name implies, vitamin supplementation should only occur when there is a deficiency. The need for vitamin supplementation is another issue with fat-soluble vitamins. Since water-soluble vitamins are used by the body or removed constantly, there is a regular requirement. Since fat-soluble vitamins are stored in the body, it is rare that an individual with a normal diet would ever require supplementation. The fact is, most people don't follow a normal diet. So, there is a chance that the concern that medical professionals have regarding these vitamins is moot. What seems to be more important is that people perform some research before blindly taking vitamins. Nutrition experts recommend that an individual consult a medical professional before creating their own vitamin supplementation plan that includes fat-soluble vitamins. The doctor will undoubtedly order blood tests to determine if there is in fact a need for vitamin supplementation. To check out the supplement we take daily and highly recommend, be sure to check out http://www.nutritional-supplement-guides.com/what-we-use.html

The Frustrations and Rewards of Parenting Teenagers

Most parents - whether they admit it or not - react to the onset of their child's teenage years with either trepidation or absolute dread. We look back to our own teenage years, and wonder how our parents lived through our fads, our raging hormones, our rebellion, and our attitudes. It's almost as though, overnight, our parents went from knowing everything to knowing nothing, from understanding our hopes and dreams to being clueless about who we are and what we want out of life. Looking back, we know that parenting teenagers is no cakewalk, and can't begin to imagine how we'll survive the ordeal. If only there was a parent handbook or parent directory, teens would be so much easier to raise. Even a family newsletter with tips and hints would be welcomed and make us feel as though we're not alone in our journey. There's never a doubt that we want what's best for our children, but what are we supposed to do when we lose our equanimity and get sucked into yet another argument about friends or clothes or the car? Is there any hope of ever having another enjoyable family vacation? How do we know when our teenager just has the blues and when he or she is clinically depressed? If it's the latter, what are the skills involved in parenting troubled teens? Although we may approach our child's teenage years with dread, the truth is that parenting teenagers can be rewarding. Here are four tips to get through those teenage years. 1. Acknowledge our power. Although our teens would be loath to admit it, we still wield an enormous amount of influence over them. We may not think they're listening to us, but they are. During stressful times when we're tempted to take the bait and lay down ultimatums or get into an argument, it's important to remember that we're still role models for our teens. The more often we take the high road, the more they'll benefit. 2. Loosen the apron strings. It's difficult to accept that the purpose of the teenage years is to separate and differentiate from parents. When our teenagers begin to develop their own personal tastes and opinions, and especially when they want to be treated "as adults," it's hard to find the right balance between maintaining control and allowing them to nurture their individuality. We have the right and the obligation to set rules and standards, but we can't set them arbitrarily. If our teens demonstrate that they're trustworthy, we must give them room to grow. 3. Be vigilant. It's difficult to imagine that parenting teenagers is more difficult than parenting toddlers, but it's true. We may have loosened the apron strings, but that doesn't mean we should let go. All teenagers have secrets, and it's our job to make sure that our teens' secrets don't have the potential to harm themselves or others. That doesn't mean snooping (trust goes both ways), but it does mean staying involved in and aware of their activities and friends. 4. Listen with our ears and our hearts. Teenagers are notoriously uncommunicative, so listening is doubly important. This means listening both when they're speaking and when they're not. As the saying goes, silence can speak volumes, so it's crucial to learn to interpret the different kinds of silence. We also need to learn to listen by asking. This doesn't mean hounding our teens with questions, but asking their opinions and truly hearing what they have to say - without passing judgment or correcting them. All teens seek acceptance, and although most go through periods of feeling acceptance is lacking from their peers, we can fill in the gaps. There's no doubt that parenting teenagers is incredibly challenging. And the reality is that we may not see the fruits of our efforts for several years. But when we devote the time and develop the skills to effectively parent our teens, we will experience the rewards, both now and in the future.

The DIY Approach To Getting Rid Of Pests In Your Home

You can defeat ants, cockroaches, spiders, fleas and bedbugs. They're more than a nuisance. They can cause medical problems: • Recent studies attribute cockroach allergens as the number- three contributor to children's asthma. • Of the 10,000 spider bites reported each year, about 20 percent come from the brown recluse spider, one of six poisonous spiders in the United States. A bite from one of these spiders can take months to heal. • Adult fleas are not only a nuisance to humans and their pets, but can cause medical problems including flea allergy dermatitis, tapeworms, secondary skin irritations and, in extreme cases, anemia. • Bedbugs feed mainly on the blood of humans at night when people are asleep. As they feed, they inject a salivary secretion into the wound that often causes the skin to itch and become swollen. Scratching causes sores that may become infected. The best way to control indoor pests is to prevent them from entering your home. Eliminate standing water in or around your house. Stack wood away from your house. Store food in sealed containers. Keep a clean kitchen. Caulk cracks and crevices indoors and out. Bathe pets regularly so that fleas and Lyme disease-carrying ticks aren't transported inside. "However, even the cleanest, well-caulked home can be inviting to many pests," says Bayer Advanced™ entomologist Ken Kukorowski, PhD. "But there's a simple, do-it-yourself approach to eliminating pests." Bayer Advanced™ Home Pest Control, now available with a battery-operated sprayer, kills ants, roaches, spiders, fleas, bedbugs and other pests on contact and lasts for up to nine months indoors. No other do-it-yourself home pest-control product protects for a longer period of time. Spray it into cracks, crevices and other spots where insects hide indoors. Outside, spray a three- to four-foot band alongside the foundation of the house as well as around windows and doors to create a barrier to keep bugs out. Always be sure to follow the instructions on the label. All Bayer Advanced products carry a money-back guarantee.

Creating Ideas For Gift Baskets

Great ideas for gift baskets are not so hard to come by. A little bit of thought, planning and imagination will yield spectacular baskets filled with original and appreciated gifts for anyone on your gift list throughout the year. Whether you are designing your own gift basket or creating a list with pre-made gift baskets in mind, the ideas for gift baskets are never ending.

Thought-filled ideas for gift baskets might seem like a difficult task initially. In reality there are many ways to begin creating ideas for gift baskets that will become a natural choice in future gift giving. Knowing what is interesting to the recipient of any gift is the key to making it personalized and customized. And, even if you are not certain the exact interest, most times you can successfully wing it.

For example, ideas for gift baskets designed for teenaged grandchildren who live far away might encompass just researching what a teenager in general might be interested in. You can begin with general interest items such as music gift cards and headphones. If you are fortunate to know teenagers well enough to narrow the generality into uniquely specific gift ideas that fill a basket, you can come up with a plethora of creative options.

Smiles are in store when ideas for gift baskets are thought out and executed in a way that covers all bases. Baby shower, bridal shower, and anniversary gift baskets are an ideal way to gather similar gifts and present them in an imaginary way. Co-workers and employers alike can be celebrated with very little forethought and a loving heart.

Holiday ideas for gift baskets open up countless ways to celebrate. An ornament hanging from the handle of a decorative basket filled to overflowing with Christmas gifts is just the beginning to a whole array of gift basket ideas. Easter baskets might just be the idea from which ideas for gift baskets originated.

Birthdays are always a great place to practice your ideas for gift basket skills. No matter what age group or what the interest; you can fill a gift basket that is appreciated. For any special female in your life relaxing bath oils, handmade soaps, and perfumed sprays are always a hit. For the younger man on your list you might want to include comic books, Hot Wheel cars, and a bag of water balloons to fill.

Ideas for gift baskets begin and end with the thought of sharing and celebrating. No matter what occasion you are celebrating, it is the thought that truly counts. So trust your instincts and follow your heart to a place where the gift of a gift basket perfectly expresses your thoughtfulness. You will make some one very happy in the process of creating the perfect ideas for gift baskets that land a lasting impression.

The Rise Of The Dollar Stores

Sheryl Huenster is a self proclaimed dollar store junkie. The Clifton mother of four makes the trek to various fixed price stores within a ten mile radius of her white clapboard home two or three times per week. “I’m an addict. I admit it. I can’t go more than a week without visiting the stores, unless I’m on vacation. You better believe that when I go to the Jersey Shore I know where the all the stores are in the Toms River area,” she laughed. Years after the close of Woolworth’s and other “Five and Dime” stores, dollar stores are filling the void by opening up around the country, but they seem almost ubiquitous to New Jersey. Many of the stores are operated by immigrants who have a knack for buying low priced goods overseas and having them shipped to the U.S. to sell for a dollar a piece. Like Woolworth’s, the dollar stores carry “sundry” items such as hair brushes, small picture frames, toothpaste, games, toys, etc., as well as harder to find items that the more upscale stores don’t carry. Ice cube trays, magnets, gift bags, flags, paper, coffee mugs, staples, paint brushes, hand cream, eyeglass cases, candles, soap, are some of the things that Sheryl keeps an eye out for. “I found a baster yesterday for my Thanksgiving turkey. I use it just once then I toss it. It is far easier to replace a baster than trying to clean the darn thing!” Elise Brookings of Wayne is another dollar store fan who visits her favorite store at least twice a week. “I go to the store on Hamburg Tpk. You have to go back often as the stock changes all the time; once an item is gone it is rarely seen again.” Elise navigates the store’s aisles with a shopping cart which is quickly filling with gift bags, wrapping paper and what she calls stocking stuffers. “Playing cards, figurines, books, these are some of the items my kids will find in their stocking this year. Most of the stocking stuffers will be things I find in this store; I’ll go to CVS for the candy, but for little else.” Not all the stores prove to be successful. A store in Haledon and another one in Paterson have closed within the past year, while stores in neighboring towns have opened or expanded. Shoppers will tell you that it isn’t always the location, but the type of inventory carried. Jan Chavez of Bloomfield is very selective in choosing which stores to visit. “I can tell almost immediately if a store will be a success or not. If they sell items I could get at the Giants Stadium flea market it won’t work out. Too common and not worth the dollar; I can find the same items discounted at my supermarket.” The diminutive woman with toddler in tow added, “When I visit dollar stores I want a real bargain. It should be something that would have sold for several times the amount originally or would still sell for much more than a dollar if sold elsewhere.” Store manager Pava, who works at one of the area shops, said the reason that his store is so successful is that the store’s buyer travels throughout the Far East making purchases directly. It may seem odd to send a buyer so far away for items that sell for so little, however the store is making money and a quickly turning inventory is what keeps bringing the customers back. Indeed, store owners count on shoppers like Sheryl and Elise who make multiple visits to sustain them. Pava added, “Nobody buys just one item, they buy in bulk. Just this morning a teacher came in and purchased 26 toys. She plans on giving them to each of her students for Christmas.” If Sheryl, Elise, and Jan are the atypical customer, than Pava’s shop and those like his should be considered a raging success. Judging by the lines at the three open registers and the inventory on hand, his shop will probably be around for a long time. “We will be opening a second store next year in the Morristown area. It’ll be even larger than this one”, concluded Pava as he excused himself to go to a nearby counter to help wrap up glass dishes that were just purchased. With a full parking lot and clerks constantly replenishing inventory, the successful dollar store will be an important part of the suburban scene for years to come. Woolworth’s may not only be gone, it may soon be forgotten. This article originally appeared on Townstead.com, a defunct site managed by Matt Keegan. It was part of his "Life in New Jersey" series of articles.

Creating An Ambiance - Event Planning Decoration Ideas

You've sent out the invitations, prepared all of the food, stocked up the liquor cabinet and somehow it still doesn't seem as though you are having a party. You forgot one very important detail when you were doing your event planning and that detail was decorations.

Decorations can make or break a party. Just ask any child who has been to a birthday party that was void of balloons and streamers. They'll have a good time, but without the celebratory environment, there is an important aspect missing.

When you are handling the event planning for your gathering, it's important to consider if decorations will add to the experience. You wouldn't want to hang banners or wear party hats during a dinner party with your business associates, but if you are throwing a Valentine's Day Bash, or a picnic to celebrate your nation's birthday, decorations can create a fun and festive mood.

During the event planning stage consider what you would envision the room or venue to look like. By doing this you can get a better sense of what you will require once it comes to purchasing the decorating supplies. If it's a children's birthday party, for instance, you'll want brightly colored balloons, a banner with the words "Happy Birthday" written along it and perhaps even a piñata. A piñata automatically symbolizes a celebration and during the party it becomes a festive focal point as well as being a game and source of hidden treats for the children as the party winds down.

Halloween parties also are much more enjoyable when there are decorations adorning the walls. Netting that resembles spider webs can be purchased for a very reasonable price at many event planning stores. There you'll also find plastic spiders and pumpkins of all sizes that will get your guests into a ghoulish mood. You can even purchase replica cauldrons that can hold snacks in lieu of a regular bowl or serving platter. It adds to the tone of the party when small details like that are incorporated.

Decorations don't need to be bright, colorful or attention grabbing. In the case of an intimate dinner party or cocktails with colleagues, a vase of fresh flowers adds a special touch to the room. It speaks of attention to detail and your guests will appreciate your gesture. You've shown them that you've taken time to add something special to the room. Their presence deserves that.

Regardless of what type of event planning you are doing, adding an extra touch to the aesthetics of the room will not only charm your guests but it will speak to the importance you place on the event. It doesn't need to be dozens of balloons or streamers hung from the rafters but it should add to the mood of the party and the environment. When you are handling your event planning, don't overlook the look of the room. Appropriate decorations should be near the top of your list.

Thinking About Dolls

Imagination plays a big part of growing up. Children are fascinated by “acting out” what it would be like to be grown up. Toys play a vital part of this process. Almost anything can be a toy. From sticks and rocks to old socks, if it can be imagined, it can become a toy. I suppose dolls have been around since before written history. Traditionally a toy that girls have used for centuries, dolls have played a vital part in the growing-up process. From learning how to care for a baby to becoming a jet-setting executive, dolls have helped young ladies dream about the future. Just like the children who play with them, dolls come in all shapes, colors, ages and sizes. There are Barbie, Ken, Cabbage Patch, My Little Pony, American Girl and Bratz Dolls, just to name a few. They can be as simple as paper cut-out dolls and as complex, and expensive, as detailed porcelain dolls. For the boys out there, let’s not forget GI Joe and all those “action figures” (come on guys, admit it, they really are dolls, too!). As varied as the types of dolls, so are the materials that make them. Early dolls were made of wood and, later, paper-mache. The finest dolls had china heads and sometimes hands with wooden-jointed bodies. In the early days of the United States many dolls were made at home. Sew a few old rags together, and you have a new playmate. Of course, nowadays dolls are not just for kids. Doll collecting has become a very popular hobby among adults as well as children. There are many categories of collections. Some focus on the ubiquitous Barbie, especially early and now rare editions. Others choose antique dolls, or dolls specific to a period of time. Still other collectors focus on a single manufacturer, country or style of doll. If you do not desire to dig and research, there are many special or collector’s editions of dolls produced today. No discussion of dolls would be complete without a look at the growing hobby of dollhouses and miniatures. This has become a hobby unto itself. Once more, materials and types are as varied as the dolls they shelter. A dollhouse can be made by a child from a simple cardboard box. Dollhouses can also range to exact scale replicas of homes with exact scale furnishings, and even full lighting. Those with limited space may chose to do a “shadow box” that meticulously details one room of a house. It would not surprise me if somewhere some stickler for detail builds a dollhouse with full working plumbing! So, whether Barbie is jet setting all over the world, or GI Joe is saving the world, if you just want to “play” or construct an exact scale model of the White House, dolls and their accessories can take you wherever your imagination can go. They can make a rainy day go by faster, or allow an over-stressed adult a creative outlet. Anyway you look at it, dolls are cool.

Creating a Memory Book through Scrapbooking

The art of Scrapbooking has become very popular. Scrapbooking allows you to create memory books that are so much more than the old standard, boring photo albums of yesterday. Using the immense supplies available for you to choose from in your Scrapbooking, you can create memory books that reflect not only your personality: but that also help you to capture the true “essence” of those special memories you want remembered forever.

You can begin making your memory scrapbook, sure to become a treasure to be shared from generation to generation with basic materials like patterned paper, rubber stamps, patterns, stencils, stickers, serrated- scissors, and the photos you already have. This is just a small example of the many supplies that are available for you to choose from in creating your memory book. You can find Scrapbooking supplies online and in many malls and outlet stores today. Software programs are also available to help you design the perfect memory book for your precious memories.

Begin by looking at a photo; recall the memories and feelings that arise by looking at this picture that has been captured on film. What does this picture represent to you? Maybe it is the love of family and friends, or the adventure you found on your last vacation. Whatever it is, consider how you might best represent these feelings, and memories so that someone else looking at this same photograph, even a few generations removed, will be able to understand the emotions and circumstances surrounding the images of the people, places, or things seen in this particular piece of film. Being able to know why a certain picture was taken, and what it meant to the one who took the shot, results in a ‘bonding’ between the original picture taker, the event captured, and the one who is now looking at these images.

Once you have started to think about what this picture means to you and how you would like to best represent that meaning, you can start to create a memory scrapbook that will keep these precious memories alive forever. The best memory books have pages that employ the use of many different types of materials. Don’t be afraid to mix stickers with cut-outs (made by designed scissors), patterned papers, stencils, rubber stamp images, markers, crayons, and labels. Let your creative-side come out in the designing of your memory books.

With a little creativity it is easy to create memory scrapbooks that are a joy to share with family and friends. Family history can be captured in these books: to be recalled in your lifetime and as testimonials of relatives in the past, to be known and remembered by the generations to follow. You not only have a plethora of choices in materials already available to choose from in creating your memory book, new ideas, and materials are created every day for those who want to use scrapbooking as a way to create memory books that will last forever.

What should you use to hold your newly created memory pages? You can choose to use a standard photo album, one that you can decorate using the same materials used in making your memory pages. Or maybe you will want to complete your memory book by laminating a couple of special memory pages for the front and back covers, and then “binding” them together with all of your memory pages into a book. You can learn more about bookbinding through books and software programs. Scrapbook stores and the internet are also good sources of information about scrapbooking and bookbinding.

The Sweet Life Without Anxiety

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, directed by Tim Burton, is one of the greatest films ever made for both the art film and mainstream movie industries. The book-based film managed to bring across the reality of different kinds of anxiety in children. According to psychologists, child anxiety is characterized by overwhelming fear, worry and apprehension. In the film, some of the children who entered Willy Wonka's confectionery factory exhibited some forms of anxiety. As the story goes, Willy Wonka announced that five golden tickets would be placed inside chocolates made and sold by his company. Whoever found the tickets would be allowed a rare chance to enter and see how the factory works. One of the lucky ticket holders, Violet Beauregard, the competitive and athletic girl, exhibited performance anxiety. Psychological experts say that this type of anxiety is described to be an overwhelming fear of not being on the top or not being first place. Violet Beauregard, which was seen in the movie, was a goal-getter. Trained by her mom, she managed to amass multitudes of trophies which helped her to go for more. Also, there are number of movie montage that showed the idea of performance anxiety which was seen in Violet. It is also noteworthy to include that her mother helped ignite the performance anxiety in Violet as she always push her to her limit. Just like in the movie, many children in real life tend to be overtly conscious of their performance and self-worth. While many children love being in the limelight or being acknowledged as the best in what they do, some actually do get exhausted due to the chronic pressure of having to always “perform.” Performance anxiety can also be caused by the high and unrealistic realistic standards set by parents like what Mrs. Beauregard did in the movie. These pressures can escalate to a point where it has a negative impact on a child's development, engendering a feeling of tension and anxiety. Another character exhibiting signs of child anxiety was Veruca Salt, the rich girl who always got what she wanted from her doting father. One time, she asked for a horse from a father, and he willingly gave in to would always give into the whims of his daughter. Social anxiety, or the overwhelming care on one's personal status was exhibited in the part where she asked for one of the squirrels working as a nut sorter for Willy Wonka. Although she did not have any use for a trained squirrel, she demanded the purchase of one from her father believing that their social status and wealth entitles them to anything that she desires. This type of anxiety is present in children everywhere. Social groups or cliques in school are formed because its members believe that they are privileged and deserve to be set apart from the rest of the population. Movies can act as a mirror of what happens in real life. In this sense, the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory sheds some light on a part of a child's life that can threaten their development, educating viewers on the adverse effect of anxiety on children. Whether or not they take these lessons to heart is entirely up to them.

Craps Tournaments: Winning Tips and Guidance

Craps tournaments popularity is increasing lately. If you are a novice craps player who is still intimidated by the great selection of bets or you find the fuss around the craps tables too loud, you might not be able to enjoy playing craps tournaments. If you are an enthusiastic craps shooter, taking part in a craps tournament is a great way to enjoy a more intensive craps playing experience, meet other craps fans and, of course, a chance to win bigger cash prizes as well as the desired title.

Many casinos hold different types of craps tournaments to suit the different levels of skills and budgets of the players. Here you can find tips on the different types of casino craps tournaments including tips on how to choose the most suitable and enjoyable craps tournament as possible. In addition, you can find here tips on how to win in craps tournament.

Choosing a Craps Tournament

Cost: The cost of playing in a craps tournament can range from a free entry and a low buy in to an expensive entry fee with a high buy in. The prizes, needless to say, are corresponding; the higher the entry fee the larger the grand prize. The free tournaments are usually held on a weekly basis for promotional purposes while the high stack tourneys are pre scheduled, last for more than one day and their expensive entry fees include a cocktail party, free accommodation and other freebies.

Competition: Evaluating the level of the competition you are going to face in advance can be tough. However, the number of entrants allowed to take part in the tournament can give you a basic indication on the level of the competition.

Rules: Casinos often set different rules in craps tournaments. For example, some casinos require players to place a pass or dont pass bet each play on top of any other bets or limit the proposition bet to 25 dollars.

Winning a Craps Tournament

The main difference between playing a traditional craps game and a craps tournament is that with the latter you suddenly find yourself surrounded by competitors. While in a regular craps game you are used to compete against the house, in a craps tournament you are playing against the other entrants and especially against those who have managed to accumulate the biggest amount of chips. Therefore, playing craps tournaments requires amending of you strategy. Primarily, you can no longer ignore your opponents; you must keep an eye on their moves!

Tips

Always pay attention to your opponent’s chips; bear in mind that they might have been hiding chips to confuse the other players.
Pay attention especially to your closest opponents; watch their moves and conclude your future bets so you will stay far behind.
Start by playing conservatively; place small bets on pass and come bets.
When an opportunity comes up, for example after making two consecutive points change your pattern and make dont pass bet.
If during the final rolls you are still not leading, it is time to play aggressively; place large even bet your entire bankroll on one number and then hope for the best.

Have fun.

When Mother Joined The Commute

HOW IT ALL BEGAN Commuting to work is a modern phenomenon that began in earnest just after the Second World War and the development of Levittown, that community of houses that looked all the same and supplied housing for newly begun families of returning soldiers and their wives. To find tracts of land to build these developments, Levitt moved out of the city proper and into the countryside, close enough for the automobile to bring workers into the city to work, but far enough away to build on cheap land. Families, looking for a better life, moved to these houses with all their “modern” conveniences and space for the children to play. It was the late ‘40’s and the ‘50’s, so mother stayed home with the children and father went out to work, driving the family car to the city. This became the aspiration of all young couples. As the needs and wants of these young families increased, mothers began to work, first , in traditionally female jobs such as nursing, secretarial and teaching, close to home and available if their children, who were now in school, needed them. Another exodus occurred as housing again became expensive. This time, widespread ownership of the automobile allowed the father to commute to the city to work. Mother stayed at home, isolated from adult companionship for very long periods of time. Finally, mother joined the commute to higher paying employment and the long distance commute was complete. Today, the commute goes on. Cars, trains, buses, planes, ferries-all bring the commuter to and from work. The commute has been a great boon to people, not only has it allowed them to choose where to live, but it has allowed them to work in more lucrative jobs while buying houses that have more value for the dollar. There has been, however, a price to pay. Commuters lose this block of time each day, they become more stressed as the time increases, they fall to physical illness because of the commute, they become separated from the daily flow of the family and friends, they start work already stressed and find it affects their output. The mother commuter has added the additional burden of the commute to her other work. She continues, in most households, to be the homemaker who runs the house and cares for the health and welfare of the family. WHERE IT’S GOING No doubt the long distance commute will stay with us. But an interesting thing has happened along the way - the home worker. Some people are starting home businesses to avoid the commute, to save expenses and become more involved in the household. Others have worked out arrangements with their companies so that, thanks to the computer, at least part of their work time is done from home. The trend is for this to increase. There is even a bigger push among women to find a way to work from home. But before you make a decision, do be aware of the pros and cons of working from home. Some find it difficult to separate work and nonwork and feel like they are always working, or at least on call all the time. Others find it difficult to remove themselves from the activity of the household to get their work done. Still others complain of the isolation of working at home and of missing the interaction of the workplace. None of this is insurmountable, but they do need to be addressed.

We Are Simply Careless

It must be my love and passion (and lots of 'sensitivity') for 'relationship'. I always enjoy seeing how people deal with 'relationship' – any kind of relationship. Very often I will learn some lessons and wisdom from them. Just last month I was at my niece's church wedding. As usual, I became uneasy when the pastor was giving his 'speech'. I just didn't want to hear any message on why we should not be taking the other half for granted. I have heard too many times on this. But his message hit me hard this time. The pastor didn't use that 'for granted' statement throughout his speech. Instead... "Don't be careless!" was the one. Yes. Yes. Yes. I was careless towards my wife's feeling just... - when we were leaving for the church, - when I was driving, - when I was parking my car, - when we were crossing the road, - when my youngest daughter making so much requests, - when... oh no, I am too ashamed to go on. Were you careless? There was once my wife and I were finishing a drama series on TV. This is something we enjoy doing together. The husband in the story was dying of brain tumor. He could not see. He could not hear. Well, you know, this is too common in drama. But what he said to his wife 'woke me up' (Did it wake my wife up? I was not sure)... "Darling, I thought it was enough just to listen to your voice when you were talking. Now I really miss looking at you. I was so careless. I should be looking at you more often." Were you careless? I was. Are you careless? I am. But I am going to be more careful from now on. Teecee Go www.AboutRelationship.com

Counting Cards: How to Escape Detection

It is not a secret for anyone that casinos do not like blackjack counters and frequently ask them to leave or to play another game. Here, we will describe how casino management detects counters and how to act when caught. We also describe the countermeasures that casinos use against skilled players but most of all we show you how to count cards while not getting caught.

Do Casinos Object?
Most casinos have strict policies that ban any player from counting cards when playing blackjack, but some like those in New Jersey do not pay any attention to such players.

How Do You Know Whether A Casino Minds?
You do not. But you had better act as if they all do and thus save yourself the embarressment of being shoved out if they do mind and if they catch you red-handed.

How to Count Without Getting Detected?
Always keep in mind that since card counting is something that one does silently, the only method to detect it is through observing you and the manner you play. Thus, look out for the following:
1) Do not stare at the cards of other players. Glance once, count, and then move on.
2) Do not stare at the cards that have been discarded. Look quickly and then slowly move away by shifting your gaze nonchalantly from player to player.
3) Change your pattern of betting occassionaly.
4) Change the amount of betting money each round.
5) Even though you know it, loose a round or two. Do not bet big on those rounds. But likewise do not bet too small too. If the casino notices that you are always winning big and losing small, they might get suspicious.
6) Buy chips of different colours and then mix them around while playing to confuse the dealer.
7) Talk to the other players while playing, but this is especially difficult so practice this at home before trying it at a casino.
8) Pick your seat carefully: either the first chair or the third one so that you won't have to twist your head around as the cards are dealt.
9) Dress casually because smart and elegant clothes cause the dealers to think you are intelligent and they might watch you more closely.
10) Order an alcoholic drink and pretend to sip it because they are looking for those non-drinkers who are staying sober to count the cards.

The common denominator of all these is that you must never forget that the casino si watching you and how you play. Act accordingly!

Supposing that the Casino Catches On, What Should you Do?
Stay calm if the casino catches you counting cards and abide by their wishes quietely. Do not make a fuss. If they ask you to leave, do so. The faster you leave, the easier it will be for you to return later. Remember that if you make a fuss, they will all remember you, so desist from any unfriendly behaviour. Note that after shifts change, the new personnel won't know you so all you have to do is wait for that and then you can start playing again. You could also just enter the next casino and start earning money there instead of risking casino personnel from recognizing you.

Turning Any Trip Into An Interior Decorating Destination!

Copyright 2006 Melissa Galt Heading out of town for a long weekend, or maybe you have a business trip abroad? Whether it is a roadtrip to Charleston, a romantic getaway to Europe, or even a camping adventure in North Georgia, there are always opportunities to collect treasures and mementos from your travels. Here you will find quick tips and easy ideas for bringing back something memorable from even the most mundane of destinations. First take a look at your itinerary, any pockets of time at leisure? It doesn’t have to be more than an hour or so to make it worth finding out a local specialty and locating a source. Okay, so you’ve rolled your eyes, groaned and said it is all business, no leisure at all. Believe it or not, you can even get novel items these days in the airport boutiques, and I don’t mean T-shirts or ball caps. (Of course, being a captive consumer at the terminal shops, you will pay more, chalk it up to part of the experience!) Many airports are becoming regular shopping meccas for the traveler short on time. Look for specialty retailers showcasing locally made goods, whether it is a special jam or hot sauce, or a postcard made in copper (a regional mineral of wealth), favorite chocolates (I used to buy See’s, only available on the West Coast and in Hawaii.) For a true collectible try a snow globe specific to that city, or even a refrigerator magnet particular to the same. This can be a fun way to keep track of where you’ve been despite the jet lag and travel snafus. Now, if you do have a bit of time to yourself or maybe this is a weekend of playing hooky from the rest of the world, you’ll have ample opportunities to seek out local flavor. If staying in a larger hotel, always avail yourself of the concierge, they most often know the places to go, what to buy, what to pay, and other useful tidbits. (I once did an entire 30 day overseas trip with just air and hotel, and relied entirely on the concierge to plan my daily itinerary, it was personal and perfect!) Better yet, if you are staying in a bed and breakfast or other homestyle accommodation, the owners or managers will be able to provide this information too. In some cases, these places will sell decorative elements from the rooms. Of course, many hotels do offer lines of product with their logo and such, if it has been a truly special stay, this may be all you need or want. I’ve been to some, such as the Biltmore in Asheville, North Carolina, that offered holiday ornaments featuring their property. I collect these so this was an ideal memento of my visit. I do know some who collect ashtrays and towels and have been known to rely on “borrowing” these from rooms and bars. Most embarrassing when one is caught, (a fellow traveler was recently!) Stick to items you can buy. Besides where would you display a large collection of ashtrays and hotel towels?? If determined to have it for free, consider limiting yourself to matchbooks, and the wine cork from dinner. The most important part about anything bought along the way is the story attached to it. So always try to record, at the minimum, where you purchased, the date, and what you paid. More interesting, of course, is who you were with and what was the occasion. What inspired you to pick up this treasure? You might be surprised to learn how fascinating goods can become once you know their history. It is much like antiquing, the value comes in knowing the provenance of the piece. These stories will be lost if you don’t take care to write them down and protect them, however insignificant you think they may sound, someone later may be endeared by it. (I still regret no knowing the stories behind many of the cherished elements I inherited some fifteen years ago, when my mother died suddenly. While certainly she had shared the tales while we were growing up, like most children, especially teenagers, I didn’t pay attention, not realizing, I wouldn’t get a chance to ask again. And, she had great stories!) It is always more interesting and personal to be able to incorporate your own trips and adventures in your interior than merely fill it with a lot of meaningless but pretty decorative elements. I often work with clients in displaying collections they have created and mementos they have saved. Those who do not have as many, I encourage to seek out what means something them, and I also take care to bring them elements that speak to their interests and preferences, sometimes their hopes and dreams. We all reflect what we surround ourselves with, it is up to us to make sure it inspires and makes us smile. Happy trails!

Corporate Transfers - 8 Steps to Help You Survive

You know the first time your spouse comes home and says we have a great opportunity or how do you feel about New Jersey, or what do think about Phoenix? Something is in the air but you‘re not quite sure what it is. The next time you hear it you know the drill, get ready for the madness. Here are some hints for the first timers.

•The corporate world puts on the concerned face for the family but the deal really is to get your husband or your wife to a location that benefits the company first. Everyone else is the baggage they try to be pleasant about. Your job is to make it work for everyone else yourself the kids the dog or cat and even the hamster.

•First things first what’s the package, what’s the deal? What is someone else doing for you and what do have to do yourself? What choices do you have? What do you control? What time frame are we talking about 60 days 90 days or is he or she reporting for work next Monday.

•You control what? You can find out about the new location check out the schools, check out the neighborhoods. All this can be done on the internet. Order relocation packages from anyone in your new city who offers one (Chamber of Commerce, New Home Builders, School Districts, and Private Schools). Get a good feel for the area before you make your house hunting trip.

•Do you have any say in Realtors (my best friend is a great realtor but maybe she’s not associated with this Relo group) or moving companies (my dad owns a moving company but we can’t use him unless we pay the freight)? Who is your relocation contact?

•Get the kids involved with the new area make sure they get the school websites. They probably logged on to them right off. Possibly emailing to kids out there before you could find the place on a map. You know its important for them not to feel left out to have some say in what’s happening.

•Our last move our girls picked their new high school. Together we determined what the best schools by size and ranking were. Identified 3 and our first day was spent checking out the schools we went on tours in each talked to counselors and decided what one was their best choice. Next day we began the home search. That may not work in every grade level but having them involved in the process is a must.

•Your Realtor will help you with your home selection. Price is just one consideration how about the neighborhood, does it have an association are the neighbors active, are there clubs, dinner club, gardening club, book club, events for the kids, events for grown ups a pool, tennis courts, play ground. Are you looking for a gated community? Is it an easy drive for your wife or husband to the office?

•What about you? Will you be working outside of the home? Check out the opportunities through your current employer. A good referral is a nice place to start. Check out your industry in the new area, make contacts with the human resources departments as a start to the interview process. Follow up when you get settled in.

Cross country moves can be hard on the whole family. Our dog settled in at each new home easier than anyone, a little sniffing around and she was right at home. For some of us the process was longer until we each made friends and became comfortable in the new school, new job, and new neighborhood.

Weddings - You are Not Who I Married Yesterday

Holy matrimony the wedding, a special day in two peoples lives where they get to exchange vows pledging their undying love for one another. Infinity together forever. Love honour and obey through sickness and in health are just a few promises that you verbally sign a contract to with the words I will and I do. But do you? Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life, so get it right. Divorce rates are quite high where grounds for parting of the ways are due to infidelity, and following strongly behind we have high up on the list for ending a marriage, is the day in question itself where you were prompted by a man of the cloth at the altar to take this man or woman to be your lawful wedded husband/wife. How could this be cited in a divorce court you may well ask? The reason being is your partner does not see you today as the person he/she married yesterday. At the time of courtship when all the wooing was done, everyone one of us would take care in our appearance. How we would dress to impress, hair styled to perfection, and you would never find a hole in the sock or stockings of your girlfriend/boyfriend. But then the inevitable happens when the gold band is placed on the finger, we incline to let our image and appearance go, it is now that the partner sees you as an intruder/impostor in his/her life. He/she feels let down as this is not the person they pledged to stay with for the rest of their lives therefore a great excuse for divorce proceedings. There will be times when we can not be dressed up to the nines due to work commitments, like holding down a busy job or being a full time mum and dad. But you owe it to yourself and that of your partner to keep the marriage alive and if that means being flavour of the month, then so be it. You need to dedicate a little spare time to yourself so you can make an effort to go back to the days of your courtship, try to do this at least once a month. Watch the reaction from your husband/wife when you enter the room as your old self. You will find your partner will have no problem living with this stranger for another month as long as he/she can look forward to this regular rendezvous Spice up the occasion with some flattering underwear like in the days gone by, not with your Wee Willie Winkie favourite nightgown. Add a little sparkle to the evening with a glass of champagne or sip it from a slipper, what ever takes your fancy. Remember this is your night where memories will come flooding back, and rest assured the memories will be all good. Should there have been any bad then there would have been no ceremony. Find the time to start loving again, you will love yourself for it and so will your husband/wife. Wishing all a true mega life and health on your wedding day.

What Lies Behind Luxury Bedding

When people go shopping for the sheets of their dreams, most commonly they tend to judge fabrics by the number of threads by square inch...But is there any reason for this mad thread count? The vendors seem to believe so, or at least they seem to be very speculative with this, putting these sheets out on sale at quite high prices. But let us analyze the problem from another point of view. If luxury bedding is indeed an equation, with more than one variable, given that thread count really is one, of course, then people should judge it from the point of view of the methodology used to produce quality fabrics. Every one knows that there are two ways of producing fabric: one solution is to manufacture it, and the other is to let nature do it! Natural fabrics are the best of all and that is what prices in shops should reflect. Luxury bedding nowadays means that the sheet has a very high number of threads, thus the fabric is said to be more pleasant to touch and feel. But this does not give any guarranties that chemicals weren’t involved in the whole process. Chemicals may give people the impression that the sheets are smooth and of qood quality, but this is only until the finishes wear off. All that remains behind them is poor quality fabric, that may harm your skin. Maybe the manufacturers have added several plies of fabric together to get a good score at thread count. Or maybe they just intended to give more durability to their fabrics. Nevertheless, many buyers fall in this trap every day. On the other hand, natural cotton is by far better than manufactured fabrics. Cotton allows skin to breathe. Another good choice when buying sheets is choosing biodegradable materials, that is if one wishes to have a silk feeling on the body while sleeping. So thread count is not a way to judge good or bad sheets, but just a marketing trick that should not mislead customers anymore. Quality and comfort are measured in a different way.

Coping With Autism-Support For Families

Based on the U.S. Department of Education’s 2002 report to Congress on IDEA the number of students with autism in U.S. schools has increased by 1354% in an eight-year period from 1991-1992 to 2000-2001 (as cited by the Autism Society of America, 2003). This increase is almost fifty times higher than all disabilities (excluding autism), which has increased in the U.S. by 28.4%. From 1991-1992 to 2000-2001 school years, the number of students with autism that are being served under IDEA has increased from 5,415 to 78,749 respectively (as cited by Autism Society of America, 2003).

According to the Center for Disease Control in 2001, autism affects an estimated 2 to 6 per 1,000 individuals and it is the most common of Pervasive Developmental Disorders (as cited by the Autism Society of America, n.d.). Based on these statistics, it is estimated that 1.5 million Americans are believed to have some form of autism (Autism Society of America, n.d.). Autism has been found to affect all races, cultures, socioeconomic statuses, and educational backgrounds (Autism Society of America, n.d.). This rate of growth in autism not only signifies a need for more professionals to be trained to teach individuals with autism, but the need for increased training and support for families of children with autism. Parents of children with autism are coping with a considerable amount of stress and an overwhelming amount of information about the disability. Families of children with autism can benefit from support from professionals, other family members, and society, in order to manage the stress effectively.

Parents of children with autism take on many roles in their child’s education. They must first recognize and pursue a diagnosis for their child. Once an accurate diagnosis is made, they must find a suitable program and services for their child. Parents need to also act as teachers in the home so that their children learn to generalize skills in the home that they are taught at school. In order for parents to be effective teachers, they need to have specialized knowledge, skills, and information about the efficacy of different treatment programs (Educating Children with Autism, 2001). Because parents are also advocates for their child, they need to have knowledge of special education law and the available services. Due to the stress level of raising a child with autism, parents need coping skills (National Academy Press, 2001). According to a study by Gallagher, (as cited by National Academy Press, 2001), the multiple roles of the parent as teacher, advocate, loving parent, and family member can be extremely demanding for parents.

In 2000 Nissenbaum, Tollefson, and Reese (as cited by The National Autistic Society, n.d.), studied the impact of an autism diagnosis on families. They found that parents actually felt relieved at having an explanation for their child’s unusual behaviors (National Autistic Society, n.d.). The diagnosis alleviated concerns that they were doing something wrong (National Autistic Society, 2000). As with other parents of children with disabilities, many parents or children with autism go through a grieving process after receiving the diagnosis of autism.

Based on research, the education of children with autism is a source of a great deal of stress for many families. Research conducted by Holroyd and McArthur in 1976 and by Donovan in 1988 (as cited by the Autism Society of America, n.d.) found that parents of children with autism experience greater stress than parents of children with mental retardation and Down Syndrome. This stress may be a result of the maladaptive and antisocial behaviors a child with autism may exhibit (Autism Society of America, n.d.). Because individuals with autism often have difficulty expressing even basic wants or needs, parents may feel frustrated when they are unable to determine the child’s needs (Autism Society of America, n.d.). The child with autism may exhibit frustration through self-injurious behaviors, aggression, or tantrums that threaten the safety of others (Autism Society of America, n.d.). Parents may feel that the stereotypic or self-stimulatory behaviors (ie: hand-flapping, tapping, lining things up, perseveration on an object), of their child with autism are strange and interfering with functioning (Autism Society of America, n.d.). Because children with autism usually have severe deficits in social skills, such as playing appropriately with peers, parents may find themselves stressed with finding appropriate leisure activities for the child at home (Autism Society of America, n.d.). Some children with autism have difficulties sleeping and may only eat limited food items, which causes another source of struggle for parents (Autism Society of America, n.d.). Family dinners may be disrupted or shortened and bedtimes may be interrupted. Sleep deprivation is common in both the child with autism and the parents of the child. Society reactions can also have a major impact on family stress and may cause the family to avoid community outings or family events (Autism Society of America, n.d.). Families may not go to family get-togethers because the child has difficulty interacting with others (Autism Society of America, n.d.). Families are sometimes embarrassed around extended family members and may have difficulty relating to other family members.

Another stress for parents is learning about all of the methods and strategies to teach children with autism. They must learn about these methods so that they can help to determine an appropriate educational placement for their child with autism and so that they can be active members in the IEP process. There are currently many treatment approaches and strategies to teach children with autism. Current methods include Applied Behavior Analysis, Discrete Trial instruction, Picture Exchange Communication System, TEACCH, Floortime, RDI, Social Stories, and Sensory Integration. Once strategies are determined, using some of these methods has potential to reduce family stress and enhance the family’s quality of life. Because many children with autism have difficulty generalizing skills, it is extremely important for parents to carry over the child’s skill training from school to the home. Parents can also be effective teachers.

Families that are taught effective behavioral intervention strategies to manage challenging behaviors, are taught and involved in the functional assessment process, are trained in facilitating functional communication (both verbal and non-verbal), have been found to have greater success at home with the child with autism (Moes & Frea, 2002). When determining behavior plans, professionals need to take into consideration family routines when analyzing challenging behaviors (Moes & Frea, 2002). Behavioral interventions are more successful and meaningful to families when their beliefs, values and goals are taken into consideration (Moes & Free, 2002).

A family centered educational approach may be the most beneficial to a child with autism and their families (National Academy Press, 2001). Formal support may come from teachers, IEP team members, doctors, the local education agency representative, and other professionals that treat the child. Informal support may come through parent networking, parent support groups, families, and neighbors. According to Bristol in 1987, “parents found a positive relationship between adequacy of social support, the use of active coping behaviors, and family adaptation for parents of children enrolled in the TEACCH program” (National Academy Press, 2001, p.34).

Coping with a child with autism is difficult and stressful for many families. As with the impact of socioeconomic status and ethnicity of the parents, there is not yet a lot of research on the stress levels of parents based on the child’s cognitive level and communication level. Based on current research, in order to cope with the stress of having a child with autism and to experience gains in their education at school and at home, parents need to learn specialized skills and teaching methods that can be implemented at home. Successful collaboration and training with professionals working with the child with autism has the capability of reducing family stress and an increase in the child with autism’s communication, socialization, cognitive, adaptive skills and a reduction in maladaptive behaviors in the home environment. Professionals working with students with autism must include the parents as advocates in the IEP process, functional behavior assessments, and behavior intervention plans.

Professionals must provide opportunities for parents to be trained in teaching methodologies used at the school. Professionals must also consider themselves a source of support for families of children with autism and be knowledgeable about special education law, treatment methods and scientific research. As a teacher of young children with autism, I have witnessed first hand the benefits of conducting parent trainings and support groups, whether they are on a group basis or an individual basis. Based on parent feedback, parent trainings and support groups are extremely beneficial to those that attend, and most parents express that there is never enough time to talk with the teachers and other parents--there is always a desire to learn more and for more opportunities to collaborate.

What Is A Youth Fundraiser?

When having a youth fundraiser, you need to keep the word youth in mind. Try to make it fun for them, as they will be doing most of the work. A youth fundraiser can be very profitable if done properly. You can get the funds you are looking for and provide fun for the kids that are doing it. If you can find someone to donate the space, then a carnival would be a wonderful youth fundraiser to have. A fundraising auction would also be a big hit. Both fundraisers would cost very little to get together, although you will need a lot of hands on help from the kids and the parents. You will have to organize carefully for either one of these fundraisers to go off smoothly and successfully. Make sure each person knows what is expected of him/her and what needs to be done. Then you’re on your way to lots of fun and big profits with your fundraiser for youth. A youth fundraiser carnival can be put together without much cost. You could have a fortune teller which would only take a glass ball, a table, and someone sitting there in a long dress and a scarf tied around the head. Have a ring toss table, where people can try to toss a ring around empty bottles and have small prizes for the ones that are successful. The youth will really get involved with this type of fundraiser as they enjoy acting and playing the games. Get large cardboard boxes and tape them together for a house of fun for the little ones or have a dartboard with safety tipped darts. Try a fish tank with magnetic fish in the tank and have a fishing contest, borrow a outdoor play set or a few of them and have this as rides for the kids, sell hot dogs hamburgers and drinks at your youth fundraiser these will surely be a hit with everyone. Fundraising auctions are also a neat way to have a youth fundraiser. Have the kids go through the community and collect items that people don’t need anymore. Get the youth themselves to donate any games or items that they don’t need. When you accumulate enough items you can start your fundraising auction. Set your items up in a large area and have a set time for viewing. Once the prospective buyers have seen all you have to offer, you can start your bidding. At a youth fundraising auction it is best to have a set price to start with and anything that is bought above this price is like icing on the cake. It will make it more than profitable for the amount of donations you need. These are not the only choices you have for a youth fundraiser. Have a brainstorming session and you will be surprised at the ideas the youths will come up with. Youth fundraisers can be a lot of fun.

Cool Sunglasses - Children Want To Wear Them Too!

Children don’t worry about the designer name when it comes to sunglasses. They just want to have cool sunglasses so that they look cool when they are wearing their shades. Parents often don’t realize the importance of choosing the right sunglasses for kids and that even a baby should wear sunglasses to protect those cute little eyes. When buying cool sunglasses for your kids you should check the UV protection that the sunglasses provide.

Not many designers offer much in the way of cool sunglasses for kids, but they are starting to realize the need for kids sunglasses. The reason that the market for baby sunglasses is not big is that parents don’t want to spend a lot of money on sunglasses for their children because chances are they will lose them. Cool kids sunglasses can sometimes be expensive.

If you do buy designer sunglasses in cool designs that your kids will like, consider using a chain that hangs around the neck. This way when the kids take off their cool sunglasses, they still have them attached and will not lose them as easily. The fact that children are not responsible enough to have expensive sunglasses is one reason that many designers are coming out with cheap baby sunglasses that look fashionable and cool.

Cool sunglasses for kids are modeled after the same designs that adults wear. Although there are many outlandish designs available in kids sunglasses, there are also the conservative designs so that the kids can look as if they are wearing the same designer shades as their parents. You can get oval, square, rectangle and cat-eyes designs in kids and baby sunglasses that come in a variety of different colored lenses.

The cool sunglasses for children do not have expensive metal frames. The baby sunglasses usually have plastic frames so that the price is more appealing for parents and the kids still can look as cool as they want. You can get the kids sunglasses in all the popular designs when you shop online.

Sitting down in front of the computer with your child to shop for cool sunglasses is also a stress-free shopping experience. You don’t have to bundle them up and take all kinds of supplies for the baby with you and you don’t have to worry about the kids getting lost. Another great thing about shopping for the kids sunglasses online is that they won’t cry for everything they see in the store, thus costing you more money.

Kids love cool sunglasses.

To Will Or Not To Will, Do’s And Don’ts In Making A Will

First things first, you should have a will. Wills not only do the obvious: distribute wealth and possessions to loved ones; they also leave an impression on how carefully one has managed his or her estate especially for those left behind. The following are things one should and should not do in making a will: Do update your will Everything changes. Possessions, money can increase or decrease. Estate tax laws change in a whim thanks to Congress. The IRS can just as well alter these laws depending on whose side they are on and how they interpret it. There are varying laws in each state. It is important to evaluate every major change in your life. Doing so could change your will for the better and your death a lot more peaceful. Do name the correct executor Executors should be ethical, honest, and efficient and be ready to give his or her service at the drop of a hat. Ensure that the potential executor has been properly briefed and that his or her consent has been received. It also helps to have one or two alternates. It is also suggested that one name an executor younger than yourself. The point is to lessen the chances of having an executor die before you do. Do not name the same person as guardian and trustee It helps to not name the person you entrust with your children with the same person you entrust with your money and finances. Having different people fulfill these varied responsibilities is important. It keeps the system in balance and each person doing the role he or she knows best what to do. Do not leave too much for a spouse Leaving money that is more than sufficient to your spouse is not a very good idea. It takes away wealth that your children should just as well have and you will not be able to monitor your finances if all of it is entrusted to your significant other. Depositing some of your financial wealth to a trust is one way to keep it growing. Do not be too specific Some families fight as to who gets the blender and who gets the kitchen sink. It is important to not be too detailed in your will as to who gets what. Being too specific could result in unnecessary and costly problems later on. It is advisable to entrust a group of your possessions to a person than listing down which item will go to whom. It saves time and is more efficient, reasonable and sensible.

This year, instead of giving your mom a boring mothers day gift, how about making her a cookie bouquet? They are really quick and easy to make, and look great.

The best thing about making a cookie bouquet, is that your mom will absolutely love you! Cookie bouquets are appreciated all year round, but they make a particularly great mothers day gift, because your mom will know you have spent time on it, rather than just going to the store and spending 2 minutes looking for some chocolate to buy :)

Many cookie bouquets are basic, and only have cookies in them. I like to add a bit more style to my bouquets, so I'm going to show you how to make a more fancy cookie bouquet, using leaves and candies as well.

You will need:
- 9 Large choc-chip cookies
- 7 Wrapped candies
- Floristry wire
- Cellophane (Any color, although I use clear)
- Ribbon
- Stem-tape
- 15 Leaves

*** Step 1: Wire and tape the leaves ***

Start by wiring and taping the leaves...

You wire a silk leaf by pushing the floristry wire through the silk part of the leaf, behind the stem. Then loop it around, and go back through the leaf, and then bend the wire back down.

To stem-tape the wire, hold it in your left hand, and then wrap the stem tape around the wire with the other hand. Make sure that you stem-tape right up to the top of the leaf, otherwise it will look ugly.

*** Step 2: Prepare cookies to be added to the cookie bouquet ***

You don't need to wrap the cookies, but I like to, because it helps to keep them fresh. I would rather have a cookie bouquet that doesn't have to be eaten straight away, so that people can leave it on the table for everyone to look at, without worrying about the cookies going stale.

Cut the cellophane into 9 squares. Make sure the cellophane squares are large enough to wrap around the cookies.

Next wrap the cookies in the cellophane, and twist the end.

Then wire and tape the cellophane, and snip off any excess cellophane.

*** Step 3: Prepare the candies to be added to the cookie bouquet ***

Wire and stem tape the candies. Depending on the different candies you used, you might have to wrap the candies in cellophane, similar to how the cookies were prepared.

*** Step 4: Fan the cookies out in the bouquet ***

Hold the cookies in a bunch in one hand. Then bend out the wire slightly, to fan out the cookies. This will leave spaces for the leaves, which we will add in the the next step...

*** Step 5: Fill in the cookies bouquet with leaves ***

Place the leaves in the gaps in the bouquet. Fan out the leaves, so that they make a circular shape. Then squeeze the bouquet together a little. (But not too tight, as we still need to put the candies in...)

*** Step 6: Add the candies to the cookie bouquet ***

Fill in any remaining gaps with the candies prepared in step 3. Try and keep the bouquet symmetrical, but don't worry about making it perfect... a little un-evenness will make the cookie bouquet seem more natural.

*** Step 7: Tape the handle ***

To finish the cookie bouquet, just trim the ends of the wires in the handle to an even length, and then stem-tape the handle.

That's it, a cookie bouquet ready to give your mom. Write out a greeting on a mothers day card, and then give your mom the card, the cookie bouquet, and a kiss on the cheek, and I'll guarantee you'll be in her good books for a few months to come!

The History of Acorn Stair Lifts

Stair lifts have increased in popularity over the last few years. This is in part because of reductions in manufacturing costs that have been passed down to the consumer. A stair chair, or stair lift, is a device that is used to allow people to easily traverse a set of stairs. It consists of a chair or small platform that travels up and down the stairs via a track that is secured to the stairs or walls. There are several companies that sell stair lifts, and one of the more popular companies is Acorn Stair Lifts. Acorn Stair Lifts is an international company that employs over 800 people worldwide . Created in 1992, Acorn began by buying new and used stair lifts and reselling them. They completely refurbished the used ones at their facility in the UK, but were quickly overwhelmed by the demand for their products. In order to fulfill all their orders, and to guarantee that the customer was receiving a well made product, they began manufacturing their own stair lifts, and have continued this tradition since. While Acorn Stair Lifts had been rebuilding other company's stair chairs, they had become alarmed by the number of design flaws in these products. By manufacturing their own, they were able to guarantee high levels of safety and reliability. Their goal was to provide a stair liftthat was easy to install, simple to use, and required little maintenance. The result was the Acorn SuperGlide Stair chair, which continues to be one of their most well known products. Until Acorn began manufacturing stair chairs, they had traditionally been powered by AC current. The developers at Acorn realized that there were many positive aspects associated with DC, battery, power. DC powers many advantages include higher safety, smooth operation, and the ability to still operate during power disruptions. Acorn pioneered this technology, and currently almost all stair lift manufacturers now offer a DC powered stair lift. Acorn Stair Lift's main headquarters and manufacturing hub is located in Yorkshire, New England. They have locations all over the world, including distribution centers in Orlando, Florida and Ontario, Canada. With over 30,000 stair chairs manufactured each year, they are the biggest manufacturer in the United Kingdom. They have dealers all over the world and supply stair lifts to customers in over 70 different countries across the globe. Their dealers are located in places like Argentina, Belgium, Japan, France, Ireland, Austria, Africa, and Portugal, and it is safe to say that they are the most diverse stair lift manufacturer in the industry today. If you are in the market for a stair lifts, then you have likely seen the many different manufacturers. Acorn provides well made products that are built to last and can be depended upon to provide many years of safe operation. With over 15 years of experience in the stair lifts industry, they have continued to think of the customer's safety first and have largely contributed to developing new and advanced technology that is geared towards creating a safe, reliable, and relatively maintenance free product.
