Stair Lifts Your Key to Freedom
Stair lifts have been around for close to 90 years. First developed in the 1920’s they have evolved into a very reliable and valuable product. For many thousands of Americans stair lifts provide an essential link between the different levels of their houses. It used to be that when you started to get older the first thing you did was sell your home and move into a single story home. This is no longer necessary because stair lifts can be safely installed in hours at a very affordable rate.
In almost all instances it is very easy to install stair lifts in your home. The exception to this is when your stairs are incredibly narrow or curved. It can be very hard to watch someone you love struggle to get up or down the stairs. Even worse is the worry you can feel when you think about them doing it by their self when there is no one there to give them a helping hand.
Stair lifts can allow the user to easily go up and down the stairs at the push of a button. While the installation is usually very simple and straightforward it is necessary to get an accurate measurement of your stairs. This can be done in several easy steps:
- Using a measuring tape, measure the distance from the top landing to the floor at the bottom of the steps. Measure in a straight line and make sure the measuring tape is tight and does not sag between steps.
- Next, using the same method as before, measure the distance from the landing to the bottom step.
- You will now need to measure the width of the stairs. Measure long ways across the bottom step.
- Next measure the distance from the bottom step to the nearest obstruction, such as a wall or door.
- You are almost done now. All you need to do is measure the height and length of one of your steps.
After you have an accurate measurement of your steps the installation will be simple and straight forward. Stair lifts can restore your confidence and make you feel safe again when you traverse the stairs in your home. Do not hesitate another moment, purchase a stair lift and make a decision that could very well save your life.

Dead-to-the-World Man Walking
One morning this week, I woke up with a black eye. How I got it still baffles me. I have my suspicions, of course, but some things are better left to themselves no matter how lonely they may get.
In getting older, I have realized certain things are changing in my body. For example, I now find myself walking in my sleep. This is a new experience for me and I'm not sure what it means or what I should do about it.
On the positive side, walking in my sleep is about the only exercise I really get these days, so I should not complain too much. It is nice to know at my age some things are still working even if it is when I am unconscious. My problem has escalated to the point where I have begun wearing sneakers to bed. Of course, I don’t wear anything else and when I find myself three blocks down the street, my sneakers had better be PDF (pretty dashing fast).
Walking in my sleep is not that bad, except for my mysterious black eye.
Not only am I walking in my sleep, but also my wife has accused me of talking in my sleep. Actually, in my own defense, talking in my sleep is the only time I get a word in edgewise. I guess in the middle of the night I'm trying to make up for this lack during the day.
Lately, I have talked so much in my sleep I wake up a little horse, which just may explain why I have been eating like one lately.
Unfortunately, my talking during the night has kept my wife awake so much; she recently requested I start preaching in my sleep so she can get to sleep.
I used to have trouble falling asleep at night. I tried counting sheep but their bleating kept me awake. When I lay there wide-awake, I began worrying about those sheep. Did someone feed them? And, am I going to have to shear all those sheep myself?
Each night I try to get in 40 winks but by the time I reach number 33 I lose count and have to start all over again. The older I get the more my sleep resembles a salad – well tossed.
Actually, noises in the night upset me the most. Sleep has a way of bringing out the noise in our house, from a dripping faucet down the hall to a creaking window shutter in the living room. It's amazing how intelligent these noises in the night can be. They are quiet until I'm just about ready to drift off into la-la-land.
For example, as far as we know we have no mice in our house. We have never seen any evidence of such critters in our blessed domicile. Yet, in the middle of the night I hear these little critters gnawing the wall right by my head. How they know where I sleep and when I go to sleep is one of the mysteries of these diminutive night stalkers.
Through the years, I have tried many things to help me get to sleep at night. For some reason I have no trouble going to sleep during the daytime particularly in the afternoon. I call these “power naps,” the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage has another name for them, which I cannot repeat here for obvious reasons, my health being the primary one.
I’ve tried everything to help me fall asleep at night. Once I placed my shoes and socks right next to my bed before I go to sleep. Although it had its intended effect upon me, it also had an adverse effect upon the other occupant of my bed.
No matter when I go to bed nor how long I have slept, I always need just one minute more of sleep. Why is it I can hear the drip of a faucet down the hall but I can't hear the clanging alarm clock at my head? Eventually, when I do full asleep the crack of dawn awakens me.
My wife, trying to assist me in my nocturnal dilemma, suggested I try some hot cocoa right before going to sleep. For the most part, it does work. My only difficulty with hot cocoa is if I don't drink it quickly enough I begin nodding halfway through and spill it on my chest. I can assure you it's a real eye opener.
I am reminded of a verse of scripture that addresses this subject. David, the Psalmist observes, "It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep" (Psalms 127:2 KJV).
And then, who could overlook Psalms 121:3-4 (KJV), "He [God] will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep."
Now, back to my black eye. I really have no recollection of how this happened. My wife has tried explaining it to me by pointing out, most correctly, that lately I have been walking in my sleep. No argument from me. Then she explained while I was walking in my sleep the other night I walked into the bathroom door causing the black eye.
I'm not in any position to question her, but I noticed she was rubbing her right fist most tenderly.

Simple and Easy Tips - How to Throw a Tailgate Party No One Will Forget
There can be no more exciting urban outdoor activity than throwing a tailgate party. Aside from the fact that tailgate parties are casual and a lot of fun, they are relatively easy to setup. You can also add a bit of pizzazz to your parties so that your friends and families won’t ever forget them. Here are some tips on how to throw a party that will dazzle your guests.
You can consider making your own invitations into a unique way. For example if you will be having a football party, you can pattern your invitation by cutting out a football shape, from a piece of brown vinyl or cardstock glued to a lighter colored paper or cardstock. Use white shoelaces or vinyl laces to create the football laces.
For great decorations, choose the materials that will match the interests for that someone special you created a party for. It could be a favorite football team, or a baseball team. Or it could be the things they love the most.
Create games that would be in accordance with the theme. If your theme for the party is about football, there are so many games and activities suited to this theme. And remember, the better prepared you are, the smoother things will move along.
The Football Toss: Each child takes a turn throwing a football through a hoop or tire or into a basket.
Football Relay Course: For younger children, do simple exercises with them, jumping jacks, running, throwing a ball...For older children, design an obstacle course that includes football practice moves, more difficult callisthenics, sprints, punting...
You can try your skills at a football shaped cake, if you are a little bit artistic and a good baker. If this seems a little complicated, make a simple rectangular cake and decorate it like a football field.
On the other hand, your theme for the party is all about cheer leading, you could try these fantastic activities and games:
The Human Pyramid: Make sure to do this either on grass or a soft mat. Help the girls create a pyramid and capture the moment with lots of pictures. Let them take turns in different positions.
Cheers: Get the girls lined up and teach them some simple cheers. You might even enlist the help of a high school cheerleader willing to come and teach some.
The parking lots of stadiums, traditionally, is where tailgate parties have been held. You can also setup a party in an area set aside specifically for tailgating. Some parties have been held in other parking lots with permission of course, or even closer to home - usually in the driveway.
One of the most important things to consider is food safety. Do not leave unpreserved food out for more than two hours, they may get spoiled. And because a lot of places might not have soap and water, be sure to bring anti- bacterial wipes and clean everything thoroughly before you go home. Be sure that you have lots of ice for your drinks to keep them cold and have lots of paper bags for your leftovers.
The very common dishes at parties are grilled and smoked dishes, but perhaps the most popular dish is Chili. It is easy to make.
A few other things to remember are disposable plates and utensils, napkins, condiments, salt and pepper, bottle and can openers, chairs or stools, paper towels, folding tables, and blankets.
Make sure you are allowed where you are going before throwing a party. Know what the restrictions there might be and what facilities are available. Be prepared to bring everything you might need because supplies will probably be limited.
Following these simple tips will ensure you have a great party.

Dealing With
Absent Fathers
To be a father is a gift and children are a blessing. Although this gift is not easy to possess, it’s something every man should seek to be endowed with, this is my opinion. This writer is also of the opinion , that a man can never be complete until he fulfills the role of a father.
Now let me make something clear here. When I use the word father, I am not talking about a biological donor. This is a man who donated his sperm to a woman and left her to raise the children alone. In my estimate he is not a father, if he purposely neglects his children.
There are some who are the exception, although very few. For some it could have been the military, prison, school, a job or other situations. Even with these factors in mind, every man has to make a decision to put his family first and decide to be a father and raise his own children.
Circumstances change and can be altered by what we do and decide no to do. So, if you decide you want that million dollar home and you work eighty hours a week to keep it, you are just as guilty as the man who walks off and leave. Why, because both of you have your priorities out of place and both of you are neglecting your children by spending more than sixty percent of your time away from home.
Society holds a different standard for an excessive working father and an absent father. But in reality the children are left alone by both. The children want to spend quality time with there father and not only see him for one hour in the morning, one hour at night and half the day on a Saturday, and be ignored all day Sunday. Therefore an excessive working father is a bad father as well.
Notice I said an excessive working father, this is a workaholic daddy. He brings home the bacon, but he’s too tired and too busy to eat it or cook it with the kids. This father is driven by one thing, and that is to provide the natural things for his family. He fails to realize that children need moral support, social support and spiritual support from him as well. His job as the leader of his home is to bring proper balance of it all.
Yes, I think it’s a shame for a man to neglect his kids. But there are a lot of men who find themselves in a situation where they can not get along with the kids mother, yet they are determined to take care of their kids and be there for them.
There are men who are incarcerated for defending their family, or for whatever reason that was not in their control. These men need support and encouragement. They need not to be judged with the same measurement of the deadbeat dad.
May God have mercy on the man who just doesn’t care at all about his children. He lives to pretend he has no child at all. This foolish man (boy) does not realize that the problems he’s continually having in his life is the result of a curse upon him, for neglecting his children. God will not allow the children to suffer more than the father who walks away. Think not that it’s all okay.
I feel like the prophet Moses bringing a message to the lost fathers in the dessert. The dessert of prisons, the streets, the crack houses, the bars and clubs, and the ones who are hiding in corporate America. I have a message for you: Come back to your kids and let your children go free.
Our children are prisoners to a lost self identity and a lack of a positive male role model. Where are the men who are examples of true leadership. Where are the men who possess the power to change our society, not by what they do for others, but what they do for their children by leaving them a legacy to go forward and change the world.
Men your only responsibility is not to just provide financially for your children. This is the easy part. You are suppose to train, guide, discipline, nurture, encourage, and lead your children. They care not about the money, to them it only get’s them the things they believe will fill the void of a missing dad.
Kids will rebel against society because they are angry at their parents. For some reason we do not think this is the simple cause of a complex problem. Therefore, it’s the failure of the father that produces dysfunctional teenager who lives a life of violence and reproduces the same cycle.
No I am not looking for some one to blame for the condition of our youth, I have found him, it’s the irresponsible father. Therefore I charge him with murder, rape, teen pregnancy, aids, drug abuse, suicide, gang violence, and so much more. The irresponsible father is the root cause of the condition of a dysfunctional society of young people.
Men, when are we going to take a stand and be fathers of purpose and lead our own children. If we fail to do so, our daughters will fall in the hands of the wrong man who will destroy her, and our sons will either be lead into the streets by gangs or lead to prison by the police.
Realize the power you have to change your child’s life. You
Possess the key that momma don’t have and the government
can’t provide. You are the missing link.

Curved Stair Lifts
A stair lift is a piece of home medical equipment that is used to carry people up and down the stairs. They are often called stair chairs because they frequently use a chair that is attached to a set of rails in order to transport a seated individual across the distance of the stairs. They do however make some models that utilize a small platform instead of a chair. The units themselves typically attach to the steps, and are found in several different shapes and sizes. For people with straight staircases, the installation is fairly straight forward and simple. Curved stair cases prevent a much more complicated installation and are much more expensive.
When you purchase a stair lift for a straight stair case, the rail system is cut to fit your specific stair case length. As long as you do not have abnormally narrow stairs, this is really the only custom part of your stair lift. When dealing with curved stairs, however, the whole track must be custom built to fit your specific stair case. Since there is no standard when it comes to curved stair cases, you will have to have a professional installer come and measure your stairs. The turn around time to build the custom track is usually anywhere from 1 ½ months to 3 months.
The fact that your track must be custom built translates into much higher costs for the consumer. A curved stair lift can easily cost in excess of $15,000. In addition they have little or no resale value. This is because every stair case is a little different; it is incredibly unlikely that you will be able to use it on any stair case with the exception of the one it was built for. This means that if you decide to move, in addition to not being able to sell it, you will not be able to put it in your new home.
In some instances it is actually possible to install 2 straight stair lifts in the place of 1 curved stair lift. This will save the consumer tremendous amounts of money, but is only possible on some types of stair cases. If your stair case features a landing halfway down, and if the stair case is 'L' shaped then it may be possible to use two stair lifts. If the curved stair case can be divided into 2 straight staircases, then it is possible to get away from the large costs associated with a curved stair lift.
If you have no other recourse than to get a curved stair lift, you will want to do a good deal of research before you commit to a specific model. Since you can expect to wait at least 6 weeks from the time you order it to the time they finish building it, you should resist the urge to purchase one just to get the ball rolling. Instead it is better to take your time and carefully find a company that has good reviews, both in the quality of their product, but also their responsiveness to customer needs. Curved stair lifts have notoriously been prone to mechanical problems, so ensure that you have found a dealer that provides a very good warranty as well.

Stair Lift Maintenance
Stair lifts are devices that are used to help individuals with mobility problems ascend and descend the stairs. Using a small platform, called a perch, or a chair, these devices carry the individual up and down the stairs using a track system. Quality brands like Acorn, Summit, and Ameriglide are all thoroughly tested so that they will provide you many years of dependable service. These quality stair lifts are engineered in such a way that they will need very little maintenance. There are a few things however that you should keep an eye on.
It is often said that an ounce of protection is worth a pound of cure. This is almost always true because most big problems started out as relatively small and benign things that could have been fixed if they had been caught. This is why it is important to pay attention to your stair lift. If you ever notice any movement or wobble to the track, then it is a good idea to inspect the braces and ensure that it is properly secured to the stairs.
Most stair lifts require that the track be greased periodically. Check your owner’s manual and make sure you apply the proper type of grease at the frequency prescribed by the manual. This is probably the most maintenance you will ever have to do. There is also a fuse that may need to be replaced once in a blue moon. Otherwise, though, your unit should always move slowly and steadily.
Some stair lifts are engineered in such a manner that they need no actual maintenance for several years. These quality stair lifts are made to run and function for a very long time. Make sure you read and follow the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule, however, because it will guarantee your equipments long life. You should also always pay attention to how your stair lift runs and functions so you can spot anything out of the ordinary.
